Mythology is, at its core, the literary lineage of the most universal and deep-rooted aspects of our human culture, and the stories are still relevant today. When renaissance painters rediscovered the work of the ancients, they infused into their work moments of profound emotion that allow us to touch immortality. These works aspire to this same sense of timeless and classical beauty.

The Art of Martijn Caspar Swart: Making Light in the Dark

Martijn Caspar Swart’s exhibition of narrative paintings Myths & Legends at the Figure Ground Art Gallery in Seattle opening July 7 draws on the rich tradition of tragicomedy from the ancient Greeks, Roman poet Ovid, and Shakespeare.

Martijn Caspar Swart was born in Den Haag, The Netherlands, and immigrated and grew up in Bozeman, Montana. He graduated from Montana State in Literature and then from the Aristides Classical Atelier at the Gage Academy in Seattle. He then travelled to Europe to study with Odd Nerdrum. He is a figurative painter in the tradition of Rembrandt, Rubens and Titiano.
